Use Gilding Flakes to Sparkle Up Your Card

The new year is starting well – I’ve finally carved out some time to play with a challenge, just for fun! I picked The Card Concept, which has a beautiful inspiration photo. And while I have an aversion to traditional love/valentine’s cards, I was inspired by the ombre color effect. Take a look at the video to see how I created this card:

I have to admit, the way I created this ombre effect didn’t just spring from my brain (I wish!), but was inspired by my wonderful friend C (check out her amazing blog here) who recently used paint chips for her cards. As a non-native speaker of English, I had to look up what that was, but when I realized what she was using, I looked at my paper scraps in an entirely different way Image may be NSFW.

I also got a new color of Gilding Flakes – I used a different brand and color combination in the past here – and wondered if they’d behave similarly (which they do, no difference I could detect between Cosmic Shimmer and Indigo Blu). Of course you could simply silver emboss the butterflies, but Gilding Flakes give you a wonderful texture which you can see and feel and it’s just a wonderful medium (if you can hold your breath or survive on very shallow breathing for a few minutes).

I’m currently looking for a large container that can be safely locked (similar to my embossing powder containers) where I can mix some of my golden and silver Gilding Flakes to create my own mix (specifically, I’ trying to figure out where to store that container in my craft room). I just wish this stuff wouldn’t float around that much … looks pretty, but imagine how it looks if you ever have to sneeze Image may be NSFW.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with this card – I like the thickness of my front panel and how the stitching from the Mama Elephant die shows up. I guess this is easily my most used die ever. Love it. And the gems are a left over and since my motto for this year is to use up as many scraps as I can before buying new stuff, I put them on the card generously and I think it benefited from that.

I’m also sending this card off to another challenge called Inkspirational, and the theme is “Ombre”. (Score!). If you look closely at the inspiration the design team provided, you can see where I get my inspiration from Image may be NSFW.
